Day 3

Timimoun – Talguezi – Charouine – Tebbou

Rise early and set off in your 4x4 through a series of desert oases, with a special stop at Taguelzi, a small oasis seemingly appearing from nowhere in the vast expanses near Charouine, southwest of Timimoun. Explore its ancient ksar, a classic example of Saharan citadels that once provided safety and shelter. Perched on a hill overlooking the palm grove, the ksar features watchtowers, a mosque, homes, and storage rooms. Though now in ruins, these remnants offer insight into the austere yet disciplined life of Taguelzi’s former inhabitants.

In the afternoon, continue across the reg plateau toward the nomadic village of Tebbou and its newer palm grove. Enjoy a leisurely walk to discover the ksar and surrounding palms. Local basket weaving is a vibrant tradition here, offering a perfect chance to support the local economy through small purchases.

As dusk falls, arrive at your desert camp, where a hearty meal is already on the fire and mint tea awaits. Admire the clay sculptures and watch the stars illuminate the night sky, creating a magical arena known as Leïla Saïda. Frequent stops along the way allow time to explore, observe, and connect with the desert landscape.

Day 4

Day 4: Tebbou – Ajdir – Guelou – Takialet

Awake to the endless sands of the Sahara and continue your adventure in 4x4 vehicles toward Ajdir and then Guelou. This region of the deep Gourara is renowned for the delicate and sacred local music of Ahellil, typically performed at night while the days are devoted to agricultural work. The songs convey religious themes, focusing on praises and supplications to the Prophet, local saints, and other revered figures.

After a lunch break near Guelou, journey on to the village of Takialet, nestled within the dunes. Meet local families and observe their traditional desert dwellings, tucked among small palm groves, offering a glimpse into the resilience required to thrive in this harsh yet hospitable environment.

Day 5

Takialet – Saguia – Taghouzi

In the morning, depart by 4x4 toward Saguia, entering the heart of the Berber-speaking region. Explore the traditional Zéribas, desert huts built from tob (a mix of clay and sand), with palm structures and sandy floors. These homes are ingeniously designed to withstand the desert's drastic temperature swings. Discover the region’s basketry craftsmanship, an integral part of local culture.

In the afternoon, continue to Taghouzi, where the contrast of golden dunes and dark gray sands creates a striking desert panorama. Learn about the historical significance of the area as a stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes.

Observe how the communities have adapted over centuries to life behind the Grand Erg Occidental. Learn about the Berber heritage, their way of life, and the ongoing use of the Berber language in daily communication.

Along the way, stop at small villages and palmeries to witness the harmony between the desert environment and human settlement. This day emphasizes the living traditions and historical depth of the Gourara region.

Day 7

Talmine – Beni Salem – Temanaa

Depart in 4x4 vehicles from Talmine toward Beni Salem, traversing the bed of an oued where the striking colors of humanized landscapes alternate between ochre ksour and the vivid green of irrigated lands. Along the route, enjoy short walking excursions to observe the environment and local settlements.

Arriving in Temanaa, explore an area rich in petrified wood and admire the dramatic cliff formations that mark the banks of the ancient oued. Observe how each village overlooks its palmeraie, with water supplied by foggaras, an ingenious underground irrigation system stretching for tens of kilometers. Water distribution is carefully managed through the kesria system using a “peigne distributeur” (mechta), ensuring reliable irrigation in this arid region.

Learn about the traditional cooperative system, touiza, which enables communities to undertake agricultural work collectively. This day provides a deep insight into the interplay between desert environment, ancient engineering, and local traditions.

Transfers: 4x4 (4–5 hours) | Walks: 1–2 hours | Overnight: Bivouac

Day 8

Temanaa – Oujda – Taoursit – Timimoun

Depart from Temanaa in 4x4 vehicles, heading toward Oujda, an important palmeraie where you can observe a mausoleum with its cemetery perched on a hillside. Explore the area’s rich natural and geological heritage, including petrified wood, flint, and ancient marine shells. Notice the curious geological formations: solidified pebbles fused together, creating unusual shapes that visitors often try to detach. Enjoy a panoramic view of the Sebkha and the distant edges of the Grand Erg Occidental.

Continue to Taoursit, a less-visited region of the Gourara, where lush palmeraies and the Ksar of Taoursit nestle between plateau and dunes. Admire the harmonious blend of vegetation, traditional architecture, and historical ruins. This area showcases the desert’s natural and cultural richness, from foggaras and ksour in ruins to small Tassili formations.
