Itinerary
Discover the "Pompeii of Africa" on a captivating day trip to Timgad. Journey from Constantine through the scenic Aurès Mountains, stopping at the ancient Numidian Mausoleum of Imedghassen before exploring the magnificent UNESCO-listed Roman ruins. Walk through remarkably preserved streets, temples, and theaters with your expert guide, and optionally extend your day with a visit to the breathtaking Ghoufi Canyon.
Your adventure begins with a private pick-up from your hotel in Constantine. Sit back and relax as you journey through the dramatic Aurès Mountains. The winding roads reveal changing landscapes — from rugged peaks to gentle valleys — leading you to the historic heart of Roman Algeria.
On the way, pause to visit the Mausoleum of Imedghassen, a grand circular tomb dating back to the 3rd century BC. Believed to be the resting place of Numidian kings, this ancient monument stands as one of North Africa’s oldest and most enigmatic legacies — a perfect introduction to Algeria’s deep historical roots.
(Lunch not included.)
After lunch, begin your visit at the Timgad Museum, where remarkable artifacts set the stage for the ruins you’ll soon explore.
Highlights include:
- Exquisite Roman mosaics illustrating daily life, mythology, and gods
- Sculptures and inscriptions from ancient temples and forums
- Coins, ceramics, and everyday tools that reveal Roman ingenuity
This stop provides an essential historical context before walking into the city itself.
Step through the Arch of Trajan — your gateway to the Roman Empire — and enter a city frozen in time.
Accompanied by Toufik, your expert local guide, explore:
The Forum, once the beating heart of civic life
The Basilica, symbol of early Christianity’s rise in North Africa
The Theater, where Roman citizens gathered for entertainment
The Baths and Library, symbols of refinement and learning
Every column, arch, and street corner tells a story — and with Toufik’s narration, the stones themselves come alive.
After a day immersed in history, begin your drive back to Constantine, arriving in the late afternoon. Take a moment to reflect on the magnificence of Roman Algeria and the civilizations that once flourished here.
For travelers who wish to extend their day, an optional excursion takes you to the Ghoufi Balconies — a spectacular canyon where troglodyte dwellings cling to the cliffs. The sweeping view over the Oued Abiod valley, framed by ancient terraces and palm groves, offers a breathtaking conclusion to your Roman journey.
